Letter to Families
Dear prospective students and families,
Stanford MELODY is excited to accept new piano students who will begin lessons in January 2022. All K-12 students who have an interest in piano lessons and a financial need for free music lessons are welcome to apply through this form by Sunday, December 12, 2021 at 11:59pm. No prior musical experience is necessary.
Due to COVID-19, it is unclear whether Stanford will allow in-person lessons. We are hopeful that in-person lessons can take place in January, and will reach out with an update soon.
If your student is accepted into the MELODY program, they will be matched with a MELODY piano teacher and receive weekly private piano lessons from them, free of charge. Students and families are held to the following expectations:

- Attend weekly 45-minute private lessons taught by Stanford students. If a lesson needs to be rescheduled, please coordinate with your piano teacher in advance.
- Daily practice
- Active parental participation during online lessons for elementary-age students. A parent is expected to sit by the student during all lessons and learn piano alongside the student. Parental involvement is standard pedagogical practice for beginning students and has been proven to raise student learning outcomes.
- Participation in an annual student recital – each student is expected to perform a piece they studied in the past year for other MELODY students and their families
